The mythological story of the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom Athena’s birth appealed to the artist's love of horror movies and bizarre legends. After swallowing his pregnant wife to avoid the actualisation of a prophecy concerning their second child, Zeus began to suffer terrible headaches. When he could no longer endure the pain, the god of metalwork Hephaestus struck his head with an axe and Athena exploded fully formed wearing a shield and spear from his skull. Inspired by this story, the artist depicts the figure of Athena in canary yellow, against a royal blue backdrop.
