The dramatic sculpture portrayed in this painting is a work of art by Italian sculptor Giambologna.

The Greek mythology tale of Hercules and Nessus is one of betrayal.  In the painting, a newspaper has been placed in Hercules hand as he strikes Nessus, this is to depict the news stories that we are so often bombarded with and sometimes betrayed by when the facts have been distorted.

The title of the painting suggest that it is sometimes hard to know whether what we are reading is true or not, it encapsulated the feeling of uncertainty that many of us feel towards what we are being fed through the media.  There have been many stories reported in mainstream media which have been proven to be untrue, leaving people feeling confused and lost as to what to believe, especially when those false statements have been channeled through what we consider to be trustworthy and reliable resources.
