The ‘Childs Play’ series is a continuation of the pursuit to challenge societal perceptions of the
female anatomy. This series of paintings follows the shift from childhood to adulthood. As part of growing up, children explore different ways of using their physicality, learning where their body ends and the world begins through experimentation and play.
Puberty triggers a hyperawareness of the body, and adolescents and young adults experience the reality of suddenly having a body that in the eyes of society is eligible to be sexualised. This creates restrictions around behaviour and attire as they struggle to adhere to what is deemed socially acceptable.
The series is comprised of 4 square paintings- which create the sensation that the viewer is peering into cross sections of rooms in which you can see women relaxing in their own privacy, enjoying their own company and expressing themselves with the freedom to play, devoid of the pressures of the external gaze. Each ‘Childs Play' painting is completed in 1 sitting using minimal colour and brushstrokes in order to keep the emotional connection pure and simplistic, similar to how children communicate their thoughts and their love.
